栗林忠道中将（渡边谦 饰）是日军在硫磺岛的指挥官，负责这道日军最后的防线。栗林中将大力改革日军内部的陋习和不足，并设计出一整套对付美军、以拖延为主的作战方案。虽然他和日军的二万名官兵都上下齐心，但面对占尽空中优势的四万名美军士兵，栗林知道这将是一场没有归路的战争。
