麻木无聊的上班族门珂，因为意外面临“无聊就会死”的状况，在外星人亚森的帮助下展开自救．。精神科医师劳伦斯意外失踪，没有人知道他的去向，然而院里的精神病患麦克却似乎握有其失踪的线索。已为医院其他丑闻焦头烂额的主管格林医师，为了在消息曝光前了解失踪案件的来龙去脉，不惜牺牲圣诞假期、抛下家中妻女赶到医院，与麦克展开一场猫捉老鼠的密室解谜心战。
改編自本片編劇尼可拉斯的同名舞台劇作〈Elephant Song〉，天才導演札維耶多藍放下導演身分，與同樣能演會編又導的導演查理斯畢南梅合作，於《憂傷大象之歌》飾演瘋狂卻聰穎的精神病患麥克，與布魯斯格林伍德精彩對峙。兩人在密室空間的來往詰問，隨著主導權的轉換游移，一層層揭露彼此不為人知的過去。。Civil War veteran Josiah Grey comes to a small town to be a gospel minister.
